My interest in leading RASCBall stems back to my days as an adolescent. I have aspired to hold an executive front office position for a professional sports franchise since I was a juvenile. Having played a myriad of sports throughout my life, I was well aware at a young age a career in the sports industry was my calling. Nothing intrigues me more than the assembling of a team or the interworkings that make a championship organization what it is. From contract and trade negotiations, to talent evaluating, drafting up and coming stars, gauging monetary value of athletes, it is a passion that burns inside me.
At 14 years of age I started a coalition called "The Youth Supporters of Issue 1". Issue 1 was a county wide vote in 1998 to raise taxes one-quarter of a cent to finance an arena/stadium project in the heart of downtown Columbus. The issue was designated to build a soccer-specific stadium for MLS's Columbus Crew and the possibility of luring an NHL franchise to the capital city. I designed an informative flyer highlighting the ins and outs of the impending issue, in an effort to assist the voting public in making an educated and precise decision at the polls. The members of the coalition and I went door to door distributing the flyers, as well as conversing and educating those who were uncertain on which way their vote should sway. Unfortunately Issue 1 was defeated, leaving the downtown arena/stadium project on hold. Even after the disappointing loss I knew my cause was justified and worthwhile. That effort and experience made it apparent working in the sports industry was for me.
Issue 1 would only prove to be the beginning of my ambitious drive to make a splash in the sports world. In September of 2000 a National Lacrosse League expansion franchise was awarded to Columbus, scheduled to begin play during the forth coming season. The “Landsharks” opened the season on New Year’s Eve in front of a mediocre crowd of 8,129 fans. Attendance would steadily decline as the season progressed and eventually the team moved to Montreal for the 2001-2002 Season. After hearing confirmation of the move, I decided to start a one man campaign to bring the Landsharks back to Columbus, once again passing out flyers in support of the team throughout downtown and the surrounding areas. I took my campaign to the internet, utilizing various lacrosse and sports message boards to further rally support.
In May of 2001 I received an e-mail from New York businessman Mike Gongas, who contacted me to say he was well aware of my campaign and that the franchise would be saved. Mr. Gongas and business associate Charlie Russo purchased the rights to the team and scheduled a press conference in June to announce the plans. I was cordially invited to attend the press conference, and while in attendance NLL Commissioner Jim Jennings relayed to me the Landsharks coming back to Columbus was a direct result of my campaign.
Having yearned many years for a triumphant career in the sports industry, I do everything in my power to continually acquire knowledge about the field. I read industry trade magazines and vigorously study the work of influential and pioneering sports executives and commissioners. I have focused particularly on the likes of David Stern (NBA), Jim Jennings (NLL), Don Garber (MLS) and David Baker (AFL). I have researched these men's performances, with each respective league paralleling what I envision for the future of RASCBall. All have propelled their leagues to higher levels from which they found them. In addition I likewise have thoroughly researched various sports business moguls, the most influential being Mark Cuban, (Dallas Mavericks owner and HDTV pioneer), Pat Croce (Founder of Sports Physical Therapist, former Philadelphia 76ers owner and Acclaimed Author) and the late Lamar Hunt (former AFL-NFL and MLS Pioneer).
Building RASCBall from the ground up has been extremely humbling and a remarkable learning experience. The ultimate goals include, establishing affiliations with credible partners, exposing RASCBall to the masses and earning legitimacy from sports enthusiasts across the country. Leading RASCBall to the forefront of the American sports scene is the objective and in due time the mission will be complete. Join the Revolution!
